‘Sorry Mama’

It is not only rare for a rookie group to debut with a self-composed mini-album, but it is also quite daring. Besides announcing a grand arrival, DKB’s debut is driven by faith in themselves and the art they create. ‘Sorry Mama’ pulses with the energy of EDM and techno and upholds a rebellious resistance against the system. DKB is forging their own path in the world of K-Pop, and they’re not hesitating to do it on their own. This is a fearless coup d’état, and needless to say, we’re here for it.

‘Still’

Written by E-CHAN and GK, ‘Still’ showcases DKB’s perseverance and tenacity to stick to their musical purpose and carve out a niche within the vastness of K-Pop. Instead of giving in to the tried and tested formula for hits, DKB opts for a softer, more minimalistic sound that leaves an impression. At this point, the group is still experimenting, which allows for the scope to try new styles and genres. Electro-trap becomes a major influence in ‘Still’ to convey the feeling of urgency in the confessional. The members perform with conviction and truth, which makes the song all the more compelling.

‘Work Hard’

The title song from DKB’s third mini-album ‘Growth’ shows us a relaxed, laid-back yet determined side to the group, but more importantly, it is bursting with charisma. The lyrics are enough to make you blush, but the members dedicating it to BB just makes us go weak in the knees. Being a self-made idol group, BB are fully aware of how hard the boys work, but when they put it in a dreamy R&B track, you cannot help but swoon. From the shy and nonchalant finger hearts to the playful POVs, this song was meant to steal your heart. Now this is what we call love at first listen.

‘All In’

DKB’s 1st regular album ‘The Dice Is Cast’ and the accompanying title track ‘All In’ signal a maturity in DKB’s sonic aesthetic. Standing at the edge of ‘Youth’, ‘Love’, and ‘Growth’, ‘All In’ is a final bid and a new beginning. DKB run full force ahead, backed by a steadily emerging signature sound. This album also found members E-CHAN, D1, TEO, GK, and JunSeo returning to the studio as lyricists and composers, shaping the group’s artistic identity with their own hands. In addition, the choreography of ‘All In’ is also made by the members, led by D1, which adds to the unique authenticity of the work. If this is DKB’s 1st full album, we cannot begin to imagine how magnanimous their 10th full album might be like in the future.

‘Rollercoaster’

This emotionally-charged contemporary R&B track is classic DKB. With this song, the group successfully establishes a distinct musical identity that sets them apart and perhaps even posits them out of the limits of the K-Pop box. We have not seen a boy group be so confident in and committed to a non-pop genre in a very long time, and it certainly marks a wind of change in the trends of the industry. The vocals are cleverly pitched, neither high nor low, and the rap is delivered in baritones. Rather than fluctuating tides of composition, the consistency of the track is what makes it so soothing.

‘Sober’

Just when you thought DKB had found their comfort zone, they jump right out of it, redefining their sound with brand new pizzazz. The latest title track from ‘DKB’ masters the element of surprise with one of the most hard-hitting, catchy, and memorable melodies the group has to offer. Starting off with a gentle yet intriguing piano line, ‘Sober’ takes a hip-hop detour from its R&B roots, giving us a taste of something that we didn’t even know we needed but were subconsciously craving from DKB nonetheless. Despite what the name of the song suggests, this is exactly what liquid courage sounds like. It is refreshing and almost cathartic to see DKB embrace a sense of wild liberation and find direction in chaos in the music video for ‘Sober’, which wonderfully translates on the stage. DKB’s live skills are polished, perfected, and passionate, and ‘Sober’ has been getting the most power-packed and intense performances ever since the group’s comeback. The synchronization, in particular, is excellent, to say the least, and with each member bringing their A-game, the stage is taken to a whole new level. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that DKB is an “all-ace” group because you can’t take your eyes off of any of them. What is your favourite song by DKB?
